‘And, Yet’ is a series that weaves together sculptures, paintings, and performances, all inspired by the bittersweet story of a village that once stood but has now been demolished. Created by the artist Mingzhang Sun, this series invites us to reflect on the intersection of the modern and the traditional. Each piece acts
as a reminder of the gentle human spirit colliding with the hard realities of life.

Mingzhang explores how societal rules and expectations can shape our thoughts, sometimes even distorting our perceptions. Yet, no matter how complicated things get, there’s a powerful force within us that strives to find its own rhythm. ‘And, Yet’ encourages us to embrace life’s contradictions, celebrating the beauty that emerges when soft, human emotions meet the rigidity of solid structures. It’s a journey that challenges us to connect with our past while envisioning the possibilities of the future. Reflecting the theme of change, these pieces can be adapted and recreated using various materials and colours. The sample that Mingzhang has created can be recreated in a bold red colour or perhaps a pastel. Its wooden base can be recreated with acrylic, or other more modern materials, once again highlight themes of modernisation and change. It is intended to be versatile, a reflection of ever changing cultural landscapes.
