“Half” or “Ban” in Mandarin describes a feeling of incomplete understand- ing, a feeling that there is always something more just below the surface and just out of reach. Aiming to explore the tension that exists between our physical bodies and the internal world of thought, emotion and desire, ”Half” presents a way of thinking about the true nature of human exist- ence. It is never as clear or clean as we might want it to be.“There is another side of me that remains blurry and out of focus, and it could be that I will never fully be able to see into that fuzzy space. There is the half that I can do and the half I need to let go and yet even letting it go leaves a memory just out of view.”The “Half” series currently consists of 33 oil paintings using traditional techniques of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese landscape paintings to blend together the thoughts and feelings of incompleteness of the artist viewing himself and his life, and asking all of us how well do we really know anyone or even ourselves. And if we could finally fully see and embrace the other half of what drives us to be who and what we are would the other “Half” be enough to make us feel complete?
